Artist Statement
When I was studying drawing and painting at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, I met a nurse who had been working in the Birthing Department of the Halifax Hospital for about 30 years. I asked her what was the most extraordinary thing she had experienced in all her years of service. The nurse told me that on a snowy night when she was on call, a very young woman came into the emergency room with a baby in her hands. She had just given birth prematurely at home and, because it was cold, she had the instinct to protect him with whatever she could get her hands on. She wrapped him in a man's mitt! This (true!) story has since been a source of inspiration for me. Over the years, I have drawn several versions of this tiny premature baby swaddled in a man's mitt. In some versions, I added birds or penguins, animals known to take great care of their offspring! I think these drawings illustrate well the theme of this year: "Safe maternaland newborn care".

Lorsque j’étudiais le dessin et la peinture au Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, j’ai rencontré une infirmière qui travaillait au département de natalité de l’hôpital d’Halifax depuis une trentaine d’années. Je lui ai alors demandé qu’elle avait été la chose la plus extraordinaire qu’elle avait pu vivre durant toutes ses années de services. L’infirmière m’a raconté que par un soir de tempête de neige, alors qu’elle était de garde, une très jeune femme s’était présentée aux urgences avec un bébé dans les mains. Elle venait d’accoucher prématurément à son domicile et comme il faisait froid, elle avait eu l’instinct de le protéger avec ce qui lui était tombé sous la main. Elle l’avait emmitouflé dans une mitaine d’homme!…
Cette histoire (vraie!) a depuis été une source d’inspiration pour moi. Au fil des ans, j’ aidessiné plusieurs versions de ce tout petit bébé prématuré emmailloté dans une mitained’homme. Dans certaines versions, j’ai ajouté des oiseaux ou des manchots, animaux réputés pour prendre grand soin de leur progéniture! Je crois qu’e ces dessins illustrent bien le thème de cette année: “Safe maternal and newborn care”.
Biography
I have a background in Art History and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. In 2005, I went to Japan to study Japanese art history & Japanese religions at Sophia University in Tokyo. My artistic practice is centred around drawing. I like black and white. My goal is to build a sensitive and powerful work, without the use (or almost) of colour and which will speak to the viewer. I have had several solo exhibitions and have participated in many group exhibitions. My work is part of Collections including Collection Prêt d'oeuvres d'art, Musée du Québec, The Ottawa Art Bank, Charles S.N. Parent, Lévesque, Beaubien et Geoffrion Inc, Collection Loto-Québec, Collection de Ogilvy Renault, Montréal, COLART and Ville de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
Biographie
Je possède une formation en Histoire de l’art, ainsi qu’un Baccalauréat en arts plastiques complété au Nova Scotia College of Art and Design d’ Halifax. En 2005, je suis allée au Japon pour y étudier, l’histoire de l’art japonais & religions japonaises à Sophia University à Tokyo. Ma pratique artistique s’articule autour du dessin. J’aime le noir et le blanc. Mon objectif est de construire une oeuvre, sensible et puissante, sans l’utilisation (ou presque) de la couleur et qui parlera au spectateur.
J’ai fait plusieurs expositions solo et j’ai participé à de nombreuses expositions de groupe. Mes oeuvres font partie de Collections dont Collection Prêt d’oeuvres d’art, Musée du Québec, La banque d’oeuvres d’art d’Ottawa, Charles S.N.
