"Recharging The Floridan Aquifer" is primarily inspired by images taken by the artist although, specific word prompts could be the motivator. In this instance, the word "sustainability" was the impetus. Experimentation and problem solving are paramount to Powers-Harris' art. Many challenges are presented as each individual work develops. Often these challenges have taken her on unexpected journeys of fascinating discovery leading to artistic growth.
Working intuitively to develop this piece, two favored design methods were utilized. They are printing her bird photos on treated fabric and fussy cutting images from commercial fabrics. Once all images were cut out, placement was as visualized, and everyone is "playing well with others," they were fused to the background.
The Live Oak tree in the foreground was created by another technique used widely in Powers-Harris' art. In this instance, "scrunched" fabric provides wonderful texture for the tree bark. The branches are festooned with Spanish moss created from thread "ravels" and dyed cheesecloth.
The next step in the process is stitching all fused elements in place for added security. The last step is bringing the design to life! While only using a couple of them for this work, this can be achieved through numerous means. Such methods might be detailed machine thread painting, machine couching, machine quilting, zigzag free motion quilting, or even hand stitch. If enhancements would be of benefit, beads, buttons, ribbon, paint, stamping, colored pencil for detail, or other interesting techniques might be included. All machine techniques are done on a domestic machine.
