One of my seminal pieces, the subject of "The Princess" is the epitome of the African Earth Mother - Unvarnished, instinctive, genuine. I decided to keep the rendering simple with a white background on Swathmore paper and sepia gouache. I used the the lift-off technique, removing paint with water to expose the background. The monochromatic red-brown gouache punctuates the sweeping natural earth tones.
