Artist’s Statement

My artistic practice is completely inspired by nature and explores the beauty and fragility of the Canadian landscape. This connection to nature is continually deepened by walking in the river valleys of Toronto and the forests of Haliburton.

My recent work includes a series of “landscapes”, which are not traditional depictions of a vista; there is no horizon line. I create abstract representations of visceral, tactile memories of a moment under the sky or a canopy of trees, beside a river, or standing on a ridge.

Cast in the Shadow, is one work in this on-going mixed media series where I combine various materials and techniques on handmade cotton rag paper. I start with washes of transparent ink and acrylic paint, responding to the viscosity of the fluid materials as they run and pool on the paper. Next, deliberate, defined elements are added with pencil, graphite, and collage consisting of fragments of my own repurposed works and found paper.

As an artist, I aim to convey the importance of our role as stewards of the earth.
