Artist's Statement
As a visual designer and poster artist, I am inspired to use social and environmental values as a motive for my work. I have been interested in the potential of design and visual communication to shape human perception and experience positively. I have focused on social and environmental posters as opportunities to engage my design and examine pressing issues of our times.

This poster was developed for Gwangju Design Biennale 2019, and ‘Humanity’ was given by the 2019 Gwangju Design Biennale to the designers as the theme to interpret visually. I tried to incorporate my design belief of doing good for society and stress that “HUMANITY” should be a foundation for our life and design activities. I illustrated the abstract concept of “HUMANITY” as a big heart in an implied heart form with small shapes with diverse colors.
I intentionally introduced many hand elements to symbolize the “human” in the poster. These human elements, such as rough dots like blotches of paint instead of sharp circles, the scrapes of paint to reinforce that painterly quality have been important in shaping and framing my work. The human elements in my design are essential parts of how I do the work of communicating humanity’s role in the environment and the world.
