Sewing

My work is created mainly with metal using horsehair from abandoned violins. As my inspiration, hair has a deep meaning for me. It represents the connection between my mother and I. Hair, touch, and how to express this intimate relationship in the language of jewelry became the key ideas for me to think about. Enamel stands for the age spots on my mother’s hands, while the dyed black horsehair symbolizes my Chinese identity. I connected the horsehair and metal parts together by sewing. The sewing process reminded me of my warm memories of stroking my mother's hair in childhood, which then became a three-dimensional presence in the moment. My work is a fusion of tough metal and soft horsehair, a conversation with my childhood memories across time and space.
