The past two years of the pandemic have had a significant impact on my art practice, and this body of work allows me to capture and reflect on my experience as a university student studying remotely, as a long-distance partner to my boyfriend, as a migrant being in their home country, as a victim of the pandemic, and as someone who has fallen into the cracks.
I started making this body of work in mid-2021. Having very restricted physical and mental space, continued creation became extremely difficult. Simple materials and processes allowed me to talk to myself during that challenging time. With this body of work, colour, background, or anything to create a context for the subject to exist within, is stripped away. The bugs are left completely “naked” in the void. This blank nothingness best represents the state that I was in. Like the bugs, I was falling through the void, waiting for a non-existing landing. However, reflecting back, it is also like growing. At the bottom of a pit, we are extending our legs, and reaching back up ever so slowly.
