'Visitors At the Pearl River' is a personal and cultural voyage of mentality and physicality, exploring the place of memory in the time and space that we live in. It talks about familiarity, belonging and the fluid memories of my experiences between Guangdong, Brisbane and Melbourne, specifically, memories in the transition from childhood to adolescence. It is a projection of my spirit, my cultural heritage as well as my emotive experiences in response to unknowns.
For me, to paint is to write an ongoing narrative, setting the canvas up like a stage play and finding the continuity of abstraction expands endlessly in a poetic utopian landscape. It is also to see the duality of my being, a Chinese person living in Australia, is someone in the split worlds that run in parallel. Painting is all about being on the way to finding my place in the world.
