“Unfamiliar Familiar” observes the way that we are shaped by our social environment, specifically the relationship between us, the objects from our childhood and the effects they have on us as adults. In the painting, I wanted to attribute my love for crayons and Tamagotchi’s combined with my fears of balloons and bathtubs to the woman that I am today, in a painted collage featuring the stylistic composition of Surrealist art. Using the familiar symbol of the caterpillar for the process of metamorphosis, I wanted to depict my younger self as a caterpillar surrounded by unfamiliar objects that would soon become almost too familiar to me, having had significantly informed my own transition from girlhood to womanhood.
