'Untitled (Cheongsam deconstruction series)' is made in response to my ongoing explorations of the representational matter of Asian women. By reconstructing a Cheongsam – a traditional Chinese dress, I use a sartorial language to examine the position of Asian woman in the contemporary capitalist society and the Western social power structure.
I foreground the dilemma that many Asian women are placed in – to resist the stereotypical representations created by Western patriarchal and colonial culture, and to mark a desire for a representation of identity that battles against xenophobia and patriarchal power.
