Through Time And Space Introduction

‘Through Time and Space’ is an exhibition program created by the Museum of Chinese Australian History through its Arts Collective initiative, supported by the Australian Embassy in Beijing and RMIT University.
The Arts Collective supports Chinese Australian artists both emerging and established. It provides a platform for artists of all disciplines from visual arts to filmmaking, writing, and music. The Arts Collective assists members in forging new interpersonal connections, in the incubation and execution of unique ideas, and in presenting existing creative products.
‘Through Time and Space’ is precisely designed to celebrate a diverse group of Chinese Australian artists. Premised on the idea of presenting a record of creative responses that arose during the COVID-19 pandemic, ‘Through Time and Space’ draws together visual artists of all variegations, from contemporary painters to sculptors, filmmakers and photographers.
Interest in the exhibition to date has been wide-ranging and of impressive quality, with over 40 artists now included. Young and emerging artists enrolled in universities in the City of Melbourne represent a majority of contributing artists, as well as older more established contemporary Chinese Australian visual artists, such as Zhou Xiaoping.
This admixture of artistic styles, generations, and experience will create a unique inter-reactive presentation of creative expressions within the exhibition. Presented in the context of the Chinese Museum’s broader programs, it has the further potential to create unique interpretive linkages between Chinese Australian history and contemporary art. Through these together, the Museum aims to realise a picture of the rich, contemporary, living heritage of Chinese Australians.
‘Through Time and Space’ is free to audiences, hosted online as a virtual exhibition. It will be launched in Beijing with the Australian Embassy.
‘Through Time and Space’ is part of Chinese New Year celebrations in the City of Melbourne.
