Shadow Spaces of Home , 2022
Acrylic and inkjet print on acetate

I am a first generation, second wave, and third culture Chinese-Australian. Although I was born in Hong Kong, the place that I most strongly identify as home is within the western suburbs of Sydney, Australia. I resigned my job in 2020 when the pandemic and its associated lockdowns arrived in Melbourne, and I was left wondering who I was and where I belonged in Australian society. My thoughts returned to our childhood home, as I believed the answers to these questions could be found there. When the opportunity to revisit this location finally arrived in 2022, I was disappointed to find the place transformed and unwelcoming.
‘Shadow Spaces of Home’ is a materialisation of the home place that exists in memory ephemerally, but no longer physically. It is a sculptural installation constructed using transparent acrylic from the original schematics, along with acetate prints of photographs from my personal family archives.
