Damascene Return and more art by Richard Henry

‘Damascene Return’ is a mixed media collage, with gold leaf accents. The composition is an original quasi-periodic design, inspired by classical patterns from medieval Cairo and Damascus. It is part of the same series as ‘Harlequin’, also exhibited here.
Richard Henry is an artist and lecturer with an interest in the contemplative dimension of pattern. His background is in philosophy and cognitive psychology and he studied under Keith Critchlow. He has participated in a number of group shows and educational projects exploring links between geometry and art and undertaken field studies in Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Turkey, Egypt and Iran. He is the co-founder of Art of Islamic Pattern and has devised and taught courses on the Islamic geometric patterns for the British Museum in London, the Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts and many other leading international institutions.
