Self Portrait 1 and more art by Cristi Denney

Self Portrait 1
12 x 14 inch (h x w)

My queerness is a part of me that I continue to struggle with. It has been only until recently that I have included this topic within my artwork. While it comes naturally for me to accept and to love others for whom they authentically are, I have noticed that it is difficult for me to express this same understanding and compassion for myself.

Art has helped me openly explore the opportunity to face this unsettling energy. The internalization of fear and judgment that I had inadvertently carried with me over time, originating from loved ones and society, has become a discovered culprit within this process. As a non-binary, demisexual individual, I cognitively bounce back and forth between self-love and self-hatred, second-guessing my own feelings to conceal the void that feels oh so familiar. By unveiling this heap of dissonant layers artistically, I hope to replace this absence of peace with deep healing.
