Bosnia , 2016

The maker of this story cloth and her family were driven from their home and their village by the violence during the war. Her husband was lost in the war, and she was left alone to care for their children. During the war, a neighboring farmer lent her his cow which gave her a means to feed her family. Soon she began to make cheese. The red cow became an important symbol of hope that she and her family would survive these atrocities. She said “I found some pieces of life as the bombs fell.” Today she continues to make cheese from her own cows.
