In the last few months, the common reality of humans has drastically changed and the idea of the future transformed into a vague term. We are having an incredible intellect, vast knowledge and the best tools. We are proud of our ability to control everything, but we tend to forget our fragility.

In “Related Realities”. digitally-manipulated self-portraits photographs investigate the close and peculiar relationship between real and unreal, life and death.

In Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography, Roland Barthes affirms that photography never lies. In this project, photography does lie. With the help of this medium, a new reality is created where one can ask himself twice if what s/he sees and further understands is entirely real.

Chernobyl today is far from the wasteland of popular imagination. The so-called Exclusion zone has transformed into a beautiful, blooming and wild area. Rare species are taking advantage of human absence and are feeling better than ever being undisturbed and unharmed. An unexpected side effect of evacuating people from the area has been to create a wildlife sanctuary, where species can live untouched by human activity (just as the dolphins re-populating Venice’s canals).

The question that is posed is: Are humans, as species, bringing the Earth to extinction or are they, in fact the species at the most risk of being extinct?
