The Dussarah Durbar of His Highness Maharaja of Mysore and more art by H. Lewis

The Dussarah Durbar of His Highness Maharaja of Mysore
23.2 x 33 inch (h x w)
Engraving on paper

A direct companion to the Draupadi’s Vastraharan painting in the exhibition is this plate by H. Lewis. When compared with the canvas, similarities may be seen in the way both images are constructed, the backdrop and even in direct postures of some of the titular characters. Lewis’ plate depicts the Dasara celebrations in the state Mysore (contemporary Mysuru). Similar to the Durga Puja celebrations in Eastern India, the Mysuru festival celebrates the victory of Chamundeshwari or Durga over Mahishasura.
