Artist Biography:
Originally from Pennsylvania, New York City, and Ithaca, NY, Jim Blythe is Professor Emeritus of medieval European history at the University of Memphis. Before going to Cornell for a Ph.D., he was a student radical, a mathematics graduate student, an electric yo-yo salesperson on Times Square, a public school teacher in Brooklyn, an actuary, a computer programmer, a lexicographer, and a cook at arts festivals. For almost thirty years he has been a serious photographer, beginning with studies of the people and walls of Mexico.
He was always drawn to close-ups, dramatic color, the abstractions that arise from an uncommon view of a common subject, and the effects of dramatic lighting. Eventually he developed his most distinctive work—semi-abstract macro images of strongly-backlit objects in bottles of oil. See my portfolio, and especially my Floating World Series at
Over the years he has participated in many group and invitational shows of his photography. Some highlights include: a 2013 one-person show at the Tennessee Arts Commission gallery in Nashville, a 2009 two-person show with abstract painter Gail Buckman at the Jack Robinson Gallery in Memphis, a 2012 group show at the Harrington Brown Gallery in Memphis, a 2014 two-person show at the Leadership Memphis Gallery, a 2015 group show at the Jay Etkin Gallery in Memphis, and a 2016 one-person show at Theatre Memphis. In 2011, he won second prize in Nashville Arts Magazine Second Annual Photography Contest, which led to exhibition of the winning photograph in the Renaissance Center in Dickson, TN and the Tullahoma (TN) Fine Arts Center and both a feature and group article in the magazine.

Artist Statement:
I participated in the first Nasty Woman show, and have long been supporter of left wing politics in general and feminism in particular. As a professor I taught several courses in Many Women and Gender, and I am happy to donate my artwork to this cause.
