At the start of this project I had every intention to closely follow the theme ‘Doctors and Nurses.’ Given my daughter is in the final year of a Medicine course, I’d have no difficulty in finding subject matter. Then something happened which changed everything.

In February this year my father drove his car into a shop at an Eastern suburbs shopping centre. He panicked after another driver tooted him for being slow and pressed hard on the accelerator. Dad miraculously ‘chose’ the only vacant shop in the row to crash into so no-one was hurt, and he and mum walked away unharmed.
At age 84 dad decided he wouldn’t drive again, a decision I applauded while knowing I’d have to step up and become my parents’ driver.

This has been a blessing in that we’ve had conversations the depth of which we’d never previously had, however it’s also been confronting to witness the erosion of their independence. Dad’s mind is fine but is physically weak whereas mum, having lived with health issues for 30 years, has become increasingly forgetful of late. I take them to the shops but mostly I take them to medical appointments.

These paintings are a reflection of life since February, and while they may not strictly adhere to the doctors and nurses theme, they do reflect a realty that is fundamental to the daily life of health professionals – the patients.
