In his selected work, Alvarez's patches of colour seem to vibrate against one another in an almost audible manner, the smudged sections louder with the centre changing pitch as the red sketch beneath sweeps against the line.

Alvaro Alvarez is an established artist whose practice centres on painting and drawing. Within the vibrant fields of compartmentalised colour, there is an interesting juxtaposition between the painstakingly deliberate and the 'chance happening'. At the same time, beneath the painted surface, the graphite sketching–drawn in, rubbed back and drawn in again–acts as a subtle underlay adding depth. The delicate brushwork and feathery lines in his paintings have a delicacy and haunting ethereal quality, which harks back to his early drawings on paper, of ghostly rubbed-back figures.

Alvarez has worked at Arts Project since 2000 and has exhibited nationally and internationally with his first solo exhibition in Melbourne in 2005. Public collections include the National Gallery of Victoria. His work is also held in national and international private and corporate collections.
