This image shows the velocity distribution function of a rarefied gas in the presence of a strong external force and is the result of an actual computer simulation. The two axes in the horizontal plane represent two components of the molecular velocity while the height represents the probability that a molecule will have this velocity.

This image is very pleasing to the eye and also rich in physics and non-equilibrium phenomena. The velocity distribution has a very strong discontinuity near the center axis. It has very long tails that extend to large values of the molecular velocity and subsequently large energies of the molecules, while it is also multimodal having several peaks. It beautifully demonstrates the complexity of rarefied gas flows, where strongly non-equilibrium distributions give rise to an array of interesting phenomena.
