1921 - Swakane Road Project

Goodfellow Bros.’ first contract, the Swakane Road project, required a camp and cookhouse for forty workers. This started the tradition of hiring the best cook they could find. Jim knew from his military service: if you take good care of your people, they’ll take good care of you. The cook was fearless, too. When Jim went to check in with her to see if he could get anything for her in town, he tried to ignore the giant bull snake coming out from under the stove, because he didn’t want her to quit. But she simply said, “Don’t get nervous, Mr. Goodfellow. I keep two of them around to get rid of mice.”
