1933 - First Day on the Coulee Dam Job Site

Left to right, Jim Goodfellow, Bert Goodfellow, John H. Tibbets (office manager), Hugh Goodfellow, and Michael J. Gilmore (superintendent) opened their jobsite office in December 1933 at the dam.

Their first day on the job site they gathered around the tar-papered office. They knew this was no ordinary day, so they had a photograph taken. Three Goodfellows, their bookkeeper, and their trusty foreman, Mike Gilmore, stood still and smiled. They were the first contractor tasked with moving two million cubic yards of material, all the overburden on the west side of the river. A ceremony with dignitaries had happened earlier that year. But on this first day of work, beyond the commemorative photo, there was no fanfare when their steam shovel bit into the earth.
