Robert Bevan drew this bird’s-eye view of the pastoral Devonshire landscape with a myriad of tiny lines. His Modernist sensibility sets up spatial tension by contrasting gently curving forms of the rolling hills with flattened, angled shapes such as the fields, the thatched roof houses, and the silhouettes of foliage. The lively play of tones, shapes, and lines lead the eye back to the horizon.
