(Commissioned Print & Gift Print, 1993)

A master of the complex technique known as color reduction woodcut, Ames, Iowa native Jeanine Coupe Ryding teaches at the Art Institute of Chicago. In this process, the artist gouges lines into a woodblock. She then inks the block and prints all the sheets of the edition. She then cuts away more from the same block and prints a new color on top of the first impression on all the sheets. On and on, until out of this tangle of marks emerges the image.
