In Memento, Kerry James Marshall mourns victims of political assassination. Gun victims’ portraits on the wall behind the standing figure include Martin Luther King, Jr; John F. Kennedy; Malcolm X; martyrs of the Civil Rights movement James Cheney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner; and Black Panther leaders. The artist places the viewer at the same eye level as the woman. We share her space and her pain.
