Two Rabbis Carrying the Scrolls of the Law , 1943
75.5 x 60 cm (h x w)
Oil on canvas

© Emmanuel Levy estate

Levy uses a pared-down modern style and bold patterning to capture the joyous spirit of the Jewish festival of Simchat Torah when the complete reading of the Torah for the year is marked and celebrated, before the readings begin again. As the rabbis parade the Torah scrolls around the synagogue, they dance and sing and the fringes of their robes (tallitot) swing exuberantly.
