CHERNOBYL 1193 - 35

Is a painting of diptych on a traditional Japanese long scroll. Created for a special commemorative exhibition in 2017 in Tokyo.

The background of the left part of scroll shows the landscape of Polissya where Chernobyl city is situates. Painted from the memory of the artist who visited Forbidden zone few times.

On a top of the landscape you can see the turquoise squares with illustration that depicts history of Chernobyl from its foundation in 1193, establishment of an important Dominican monastery in 1626. Birth in the city of remarkable general Chodkiewicz in 1776. Jewish center expansion. 1977-1978 the construction of first 2 Nuclear reactors.
Locals working in their vegetable gardens that was a usual weekend activity in 1980s. 1986 square depicts children and adults preparing to a celebration of May holidays.

Splash of red color symbolises nuclear accident occurred in April 26 1986. Followed by black aftermath and grey zone of depression.
The background of a right part of a scroll shows a map of a 30km Forbidden zone of Chernobyl.

On a top you can see the white horses that appear from the grey zone and slowly getting into golden rays of sun.
Przewalski horses are very important for Chernobyl zone. They were introduced to Exclusion area in 1998 as a program of rehabilitation of the zone. The project was successful and today there are more than 150 horses.

They brought luck and new life into a disaster area. As so the idea that the hope and luck are on their way to closed zone.
