Face of Despair and more art by Jesse Burke

Face of Despair, 2014
24 x 36 inch (h x w)
archival pigment print

Wooden paneling lines fill the backdrop with warm hints of orange and brown. A pale blue chair Complements this backdrop. Hints of nature are implied as the pattern of the chair represents water, birds, and vegetation. A child lays in a tight ball; tucking her knees to her chin while she rests horizontally. The lack of amassment on her face entails a rather low moment that was presented here.

Patterns of moose, birds, and trees covered a chair just like this when I was growing up. Year after year I would tuck my knees to my chin and coddle my shins. Sitting like this as a child gave me a sense of security and comfort. Eventually, this photo reminds me of nearing the end of this child-like behavior of self-coddling. Adulthood was well underway and the realization that no longer being someone’s little girl can be a bit despairing.
