This series speaks to the structures in life which hold us from day to day, and underneath that, the absconding rapture of an unpredictable world or moment, however glorious or dark. In this, we all walk from far inside ourselves and out into new origins, with a newfound trust in vulnerability, faith and courage – where they reside as the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change. As with all art, life, decay, death and rebirth occur, we evolve and ultimately show that we each belong to this cycle of living.
Born in the Maritimes though now Toronto-based, I have lived throughout the East Coast, abroad and traveled all over the world. I “fell into batik” while observing a friend compose a market scene with wax and dyes. Where ever it is applied, wax prevents dyes from penetrating the surface; when dye spills outside the waxed area, the piece comes to life. It is enchanting to work in the negative and Arhave images appear as if from nowhere. My purpose is to generate emotions and thinking through the process of resistance. It is this unexpected energy of life and promise of a new adventure, which drives me on a daily basis.
