Inspired by discussions with an Elder about land art, I ventured out onto the land to collect the natural materials needed to produce an image of an important member of the animal nation. One of great importance to Indigenous peoples in the plains - the bison. I laid down tobacco as an offering to the plants that I collected in a sustainable manner. One day, I noticed a perfect white slate of snow after a storm. On this very cold day, it felt right to pay homage to the bison, through art, for the sustenance and tools they provided to my ancestors. Not only to my ancestors, but the important role they played in the ecosystem. I hope to one day see many herds of wild bison returning to the plains.

Saulteaux/Métis Nation of Alberta

Autumn Whiteway (“Night Singing Woman”) is a Saulteaux/Métis visual artist, traditional craftworker and curator. As an archaeologist, she has always been curious about the material culture produced by her ancestors, in addition to traditional knowledge passed down through the generations. This curiosity led her on a path of discovery, to learn many different types of traditional Indigenous crafts. Inspired by artists such as Norval Morrisseau and Kent Monkman, she additionally explores Indigenous themes from a contemporary perspective through painting and photography. Her painting and digital art is primarily focused on the heavily symbolic Woodland Style of art. Her photography, on the other hand, is used as a form of activism to highlight Indigenous issues.
