Each of my works is borne of a concept in search of form. Frequent recurring themes in my work include multiples and repetition in both process and form, koan-like text to cue meaning, a carefully crafted symbolic language, audience engagement, and a love for a wide range of materials and processes. The impetus always begins with my lived experience over time. Each work poses a reaction using visual form to express the personal. The works as a whole serve as a changing portrait of the creator.
My work takes many forms and rarely repeats. Because my thought process is long and I often tackle material and process learning curves, I may not produce as much work as many other artists. Each idea is treated as a problem to be solved. How might I express my frustration or fears in form. Can it be done in a way that allows the audience to identify. What visual language are the materials speaking. Does the material or process make sense to the subject matter. How might the viewer be given something to think about while not making the message too obtuse. Aesthetics and craft do matter but it is not my practice to focus soley on the creation of beauty. My process begins in my sketchbook as I explore ideas and possible forms. Occassionally, I discover a material or process and it gives birth to the idea. Some ideas find form more quickly while others may languish for a few years or never become realized. Because I am very adept with technology, it usually plays some role in the production of the work.
