artist statement
Represented here is a quintessential symbol of newborn care and safety: a baby’s quilt. Included in this 100% paper work are birth certificates from 18 countries, including Canada. This piece is a commentary on how the universality of the birth registration process should extend to the broader childbirth experience, so mothers and their babies everywhere have equal access to support and resources that ensure a safe and respectful birth. I used actual quilting techniques to give this piece the look and feel of a real quilt, but without using a stitch of thread or fabric. The style used here is a
vintage quilting pattern called Broken Dishes that dates back to the 18th century, which consists of triangles arranged in four-patch squares.
