Embroidery and Paint on Canvas
My subjects are long-term care home workers and residents. Sometimes I make their portraits
and sometimes I use still-life compositions as a stand in for a group of people. In my practice I
try to find beauty and acceptance in hardship. My work features embroidery and painting
techniques on canvas. Yarn and paint are familiar materials to me that act as safe tools I can
use to explore challenging themes, such as palliative and end of life care. While their familiarity
comforts me, the pairing of the materials on the same surface creates a tension that challenges
me in a way I know will lead to healing and growth.
