For Your Own Good” (2020), is a sculpture inspired by my time working in a Canadian long term care home during the first wave of Covid-19, which hit our elderly population the hardest in terms of mortality. Although the lockdown rules at our facility have successfully kept the senior residence safe from the virus, the emotional toll of being denied any visits from family, friends,or volunteers were in itself devastating. This piece, made of 100 carved figures from identical bars of soap, then placed in mason jars, which in turn are placed on shelves, allow us to look in on the miniature elderly figures, who look out at us. Although the pandemic has forced this isolation, it only amplifies what many elderly face historically within our society on a chronic and routine basis. As politicians and facilities work to fix the residential care home problems, this is the time to ask the question: is there a way to keep vulnerable seniors safe and meet their emotional needs?
Christine De Vuono is a multimedia artist working with drawing, sculpture, collage, installation, and photography. The materials of each project are chosen specifically to engage viewers in new ways to examine societal norms and values. Her work utilises antiquated practices and mindful labour, emphasising the disparity between past traditions and present efficiencies. Often focusing on the transitions we face in life, her work celebrates the needs of the psyche for beloved care and lived beauty.
