El Sol, La Luna, y el Maiz and more art by Charles Barth

Charles Barth was, for thirty years, a Professor of Art at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. He wrote of his etching, “El Sol, la luna y el maiz represents a tribute to “corn” (maiz), the lifeline of Iowa. Corn was planted during the Pre-Columbian period in the Americas by native Americans who had to be strong in order to survive many of their challenging encounters. The sun and moon represent the passage of time and the sources of the strength needed for nature to reproduce the corn. Color is my major concern. When the three primary colors overlap they produce an array of colors. The colors are vibrant and appear to glow. A “dot” style seems to give movement and rhythm to the surface of the print.”
