Time and space being experienced , 2021
54 x 48 x 1 in (h x w x d)
Installation Model: Paper, wood, string

The installation uses space as a medium to express the past, the present and the future I am looking forward to. The bottom of the installation comes from my past experience. What I remember is the sound of sea waves, the sound of ships whistling and the sound of seagulls. The people hanging in the middle express people who have experienced the same time and space as me. We are going through the same time. We come from the same land. We are all witnessing the development of this land. This land is being developed rapidly, and it may become a developed city, but these are all based on the past of this land, history and people who have witnessed the development of this land.

I am from Guangdong, China. Zhuhai is where I grew up. Cantonese is our local language. Cantonese remains today as a majority language in Guangdong, despite the increasing influence of Mandarin. Up until the second half of the 20th century, the majority of overseas Chinese emigrated from Guangdong. As a result, there are today many Cantonese communities throughout the world, including in Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Americas, the Caribbean and Western Europe, with Chinatowns commonly being established by Cantonese communities. This installation also uses human shadows as a medium, and small figure shadows can be seen everywhere in the room, which means that Cantonese people are now all over the world.
