Turbans is composed of nine turkey-like stuffed toys with copper beaks and helmets. At first glance they look like familiar domestic objects, used for child’s play. On closer inspection they take on a strange and menacing feel. The softness of the fabric contrasts with the hardness of the metal, which the artist links to stereotypes of femininity and masculinity. The title of the work implies Sikh turbans, a reference to Permindar Kaur’s Indian heritage. Often working in installation, Kaur shows the potential of textiles to be sculptural objects.
