This banner depicts hands holding up photographs of people who went missing during the Chilean dictatorship, which ran from 1973-1990. These people, most of whom were left-wing, are referred to as “the disappeared”. The banner was created by the feminist art collective, Memorarte. It is an arpillera – a type of Chilean textile art which normally has an activist element. The disappeared are referenced by pieces of cloth that have been removed.
