Error coins are formed during the minting process, most often when the coin is stamped. There are many different varieties of errors and they are well catalogued and collected by coinologists. In fact, error finding and collecting, buying and selling is probably the most popular practice of numismatics. For beginners, teh RPM or repunched mint mark is a fairly common error to get acquainted with...but even here, surprises and nuances lie ahead.
