Resting Waters , 2023
Oil on Recycled Canvas

The main idea of the piece is self care in the form of relaxation, restoration, and rest,
reflected by the focal point of the painting; a hot spring, symbolizing physical/mental
healing and the calming feeling evoked by hot springs. The figure in the middle is
submerged in the hot water, petrified to symbolize the complete rest and stasis one
feels when at peace. Some goals I had creating this piece were to experiment with
composition and hone my oil painting skills by using a variety of painting techniques to
enhance the artwork, such as using thick paint strokes with Impasto to show the waves
and ripples in the water and a palette knife to create texture. I feel creating this piece
taught me the intricacies of the oil painting process as well as the patience required to
work with and properly utilize the medium. Overall I’d say I’m fairly happy with the piece,
but would have benefited from more planning and formatting.
