Artist Statement
When I pick up a brush, I use it to weave the history of Black people from slavery to Jim Crow to the Civil Rights era to the present. My artwork is rooted in tradition and expresses the truth, strength, and resiliency of my community. Family, faith, freedom, identity, and progress are ever-present themes in my work. I tell stories with each painting I create, and my folk art is a celebration of Black heritage and an offering for those who want to learn more. I always hope that my work will bring joy to viewers and encourage a respectful exchange of ideas and perspectives.
