For many years, I have been working on and off on a series called “In The Crowd” focusing on real people encountered in the streets; complete strangers coming together and crossing paths. I find myself inspired by how people fit into the environment, how it absorbs them, and how the individual fades indistinguishably into the mass. Physically gathering in what would traditionally be considered communal locations, they move as one - breathe as one, forming a single collective entity - becoming a goliath beast. Recently, just as our world has shifted, so has the implicit meaning of the crowd, bringing a new context to this series. In these times the crowd has come to represent a simultaneous yearning for the physical connection we had only a few weeks ago and the existential anxiety stemming from the fear for our safety. This sudden and dramatic change has forced us to consider the difference between what the crowd once meant and what it means now, in this historic moment of physical separation.
