The Labourer (Old Man in a Blue Smock) , 1914
59.5 x 49 cm (h x w)
Oil on canvas

Pilichowski was the son of a poor Jewish farmer and frequently addressed Jewish themes in his work, particularly the poverty of Jews in the cities. By contrast, this portrait of a peasant labourer with his rough blue smock and leather apron recalls scenes from his earlier life in rural Poland.
