ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cynthia Beth Rubin, an early adopter of digital imaging, began the transition from paint in 1983. Her current explorations include a return to analogue drawing as a component in compositions interweaving cultural and scientific reference. As artist in residence in the Menden-Deuer Oceanography lab, her works bring empathy and curiosity to the unseen microscopic life of the ocean.

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK
What do Plankton and a 1000 year old Hebrew Manuscript from Old Cairo have in common? At first overlay they fit together so perfectly that it was eery; the circles in the manuscript echoed the circles of the diatoms; the triangular lines echoed the shapes of the ceratium, and even debris echoed micrography. Direct analogue drawing on an interim print was essential to the process of teasing out relationships, sharing with viewers the pull of tradition and the energy of vital microscopic life.
