Sir Vader , 2021
60 x 83 cm (h x w)

In ‘Sir Vader’, I appropriate the subject using replacement to depict an ironic and humorous aesthetic as I question history through the adoption of a classic portrait painting and the substitution of heads from a real-life person to a fictitious character. I have taken the popular fictitious villain of ‘Darth Vader’ from the film series ‘Star Wars’ and placed his head on the body of ‘George V’, wearing the uniform of a Military General from a portrait painting. I used Darth Vader as the face of the subject as he is easily recognisable and distinguishable as a known antagonist. I used the Military General’s uniform to render a confusing and humorous characterization as I am presenting Darth Vader in a heroic manner, rather than as a villain. I have presented this subject multiple times in a grid-like appearance to suggest a contemporary look. With some of these subjects, I have depicted them in an out of register form to give a visually vibrant and busy look. With each grid, I have demonstrated my own techniques such as paint scraping, paint rolling, stippling and sponge patterning to perceive a complex and visually arresting image using a variety of colours and patterns.
