This artwork is an abstract acrylic painting on a found object piano. My theme was “Beauty in the Undesirable” so this old piano which I found left out in the rain on the street became a symbol for undesirability. What I intended to show through this artwork was how aesthetics alter our opinion on things which hold inherent value, such as the well-crafted, laboured old piano. I stripped the pianos original dark lacquer off the piano and through coating the piece in pure white was able to give it a sense of newness and desirability that it no longer held. My vibrant colour palette was based on a blend of children’s television and 1960s psychedelic aesthetics which create beauty. The piano remains functional however all the keys are out of tune as I didn’t want to restore the old damaged piano but instead I wanted to change the way people viewed the same object. Now this piano holds beauty as an artwork and defies its previous ideas of worthlessness through its aesthetic value.
