The artist Wilson Shieh recalled: “In 2003, I spent the fall in the United States as an artist of residence. Between October and November, there were two snow storms. It was the first time I saw snow in my life. One night in November, when I was checking my email, I came across a news headline on a Hong Kong website that read “Lyricist Richard Lam died of cancer”. My heart was heavy after reading the news. My mind went blank and I aimlessly walked along a path covered with snow, despite that it was freezing cold outside. Richard Lam was a Cantopop lyricist and writer. He also drew comics. I first got to know his name when I listened to a song written by him Saam Yan Hang (literally Three People Walking) in 1981 when I was a Primary 6 schoolboy. It becomes my favourite song throughout my life. The lyrics written by Richard Lam are sometimes playful, yet affectionate as always. His lyrics inspire my art creations, and I miss him from time to time.”
