Untitled , 2021

Through this animation piece; Jacob Vuk has continued to challenge boundaries between definitions of ‘Commercial Art’, ‘Fine Art’, and ‘Entertainment'. Amongst the Gallery Art buyers of the early 20th century—post the Paris Salon world of Western Art-- two dimensional painting was favoured over those demonstrating conventions of light, form and ‘Illusionism’. Artworks demonstrating the techniques of the Western masters were no longer in vogue with New York gallery buyers. As a result; traditional painters were forced to seek jobs in the likes of Magazine Illustration, Early Animation, and comic books. This work is a celebration of the animators of the early 1900s and the surreal circumstances that saw serious young men with lofty Artistic aspirations, such as Chuck Jones of Bugs Bunny fame, instead spending their lifeblood perfecting the art of funny talking animals.
