As a magazine editor working in many large Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Zhuhai, Joyce Wang immigrated to Canada in 2013. As an adolescent, Joyce’s fashion choices were influenced by Japanese popular culture, especially some trendy television series in China in the 1980s. Her fashion icon was Yamaguchi Momoe (1959-) from Akai giwaku. The clothes Momoe wore on the screen became popular in China; thus, many people made their tailored clothes to look like that piece. Joyce was not particular about her fashion style and clothing choices. She pays more attention to colour and practicality rather than style and brand. Like many first-generation immigrants, Joyce spotted apparent differences between Chinese and Canadian clothing styles when she first came here. She thinks Chinese clothes are outstanding and brighter in colour. They could capture unwanted attention from people surrounding her. As a collector, Joyce bought many jewelry pieces on her international travels, mixing and matching them with her daily clothes to form a transnational style.
